The history of Selly Park Baptist Church

Image of Dogpool wooden chapelIn May 1867, the first service was held in a wooden chapel on the corner of St Stephens Road and Warwards Lane. This building was enlarged in 1874, and Dogpool Sunday School began here two years later.

In 1878 a new church (photo on the left) was built by the junction of Selly Park Road and Pershore Road. Costing £3400 to build (equivalent to £161,000 today), much of which was contributed by Mr William Middlemore (pictured right).

Photo of William MiddlemoreIn 1985 a new building constructed just behind the main church was built. This consists of a large hall, kitchen, lounge, and six smaller upstaris rooms. Increasingly these facilities are being used by a range of groups from within the local community. Currently the church meets in this building, but is planning to refurbish the old church next door..
